Claire Mitchell is from Tallahassee. After graduating with a degree in Women’s Studies from the University of Florida, she spent six months traveling in Argentina, volunteering at Finca El Peregrino Organico, a small, diversified sustainable farm outside of Mendoza. When she returned to the U.S. she moved to Chicago, attracted to the city by the large number of community gardens. She worked with the Chicago Botanic Garden for three years, with Green Youth Farm--working with inner city middle and high school students at urban market gardens-- and is a graduate of Windy City Harvest, a nine month sustainable urban gardening training course. During this time she also was involved with other gardening projects around the city, including the Chicago Lights Urban Farm doing youth programming for children in the Cabrini-Greene housing project and neighboring gentrifying areas, and started Roots and Rays Community Garden on an abandoned lot in the Pilsen neighborhood.
She currently lives in Tallahassee, and works at Turkey Hill Farm and Green Industries Institute as the Sustainable Agriculture Programs Manager. She likes playing bike polo and ultimate frisbee, making jewelry, and working in her own backyard garden.
